Akoni Pule's Legacy Honored with Highway Marker

For the many visitors and newcomers who have wondered about the name of the coastal highway that leads from Kawaihae to Pololu, the mystery is over. On July 7, members of the Pule `ohana joined the staff and directors of the North Kohala Community Resource Center to dedicate a new sign board which explains who Akoni Pule was, his contributions to North Kohala, and why the highway was named for him.

NKCRC Opens 'Kohala Welcome Center' on 10th Anniversary

North Kohala Community Resource Center’s long-awaited Kohala Welcome Center is now open to the public. The center has completed the public restrooms and a beautiful hallway of storyboards for both the community and visitors to enjoy. The corridor tells the story of Kohala both past and present. To enhance this experience the center has launched a “Kohala Guides” program with volunteers from the community who greet visitors, answer questions and provide additional information to make their visit the best possible.

NKCRC Named One of the 6 Great Small Non Profits in Hawaii

NKCRC has been chosen by the November Hawaii Business Magazine as one of 6 Great Small Non Profits in Hawaii!

When we read down through the article, there was a great summary at the end about what criteria they used to identify these organizations. Here is the criteria:

  1. All great nonprofits have responsible and active boards of directors who exercise prudent oversight and governance.
  2. The best agencies are always ethical and transparent in their operations.
  3. Well-run nonprofits are managed in just as businesslike a fashion – in accounting, human resources and planning – as their for-profit counterparts.

Island Innovation Fund

Honolulu, Hawai'i, March 2011 - The Hawaii Community Foundation announced the first recipients of its new Island Innovation Fund, which was created to serve as a catalyst for innovation within the nonprofit sector. A total of $461,119 was awarded to five recipients for projects. NKCRC received $82,000 for the Food Forum project's initiative which will organize the harvesting, collection and processing of excess food in rural communities to distribute back to its residents.
